Classroom Expectations
Overall Goal
Our goal as a core is to emphasize personal responsibility as well as personal and academic growth. We are preparing them for 7th grade. We are expecting a higher level of accountability on the part of the STUDENT than they may have experienced in the past. Your student may have some difficulties or failures that they have not experienced before, but this is all part of the normal developmental process. We want to work with you as a team to help your child through these challenges to build the foundation for personal success in the 21st Century.
Class Arrangement
Your child was assigned a homeroom teacher. They will greet your child every morning to take attendance & lunch count. This is also the teacher that the office will refer you to if your child is absent, needs to be excused early, or if homework needs to be sent home. Your child might be assigned another teacher for other subjects as well, however it will be one of the five teachers listed above. Therefore, if you call the homeroom teacher with questions, we may or may not be able to help you right away. However, we will find the answer and get back to you or have the appropriate teacher get back to you. Please be assured that we communicate with each other on a regular basis regarding behavioral or academic concerns.
Behavior Expectations
As a core of 5, we have common behavior expectations of your student. Our three main expectations are:
Be Respectful Be Responsible Be Safe
These three expectations are consistent with the school wide behavior matrix and will be observed throughout the school building. We will discuss what each of these look like in 5th grade as well as potential consequences for not meeting the expectations.
Homework
Your child will be assigned homework Monday – Friday in one or more subjects. Please check planners nightly for assignments. Homework is due the following day unless otherwise specified. We typically have students turn in their homework at the beginning of the class to the appropriate teacher.
Homework must be neat and readable to receive full credit. If homework is not turned in on time, students will be kept in from recess to complete the assignment. It is the students’ responsibility to have their homework on the day it is due. Students will not be allowed to use the phone after 7:55 AM to call home to have their homework delivered to school.
Assignment Policies
Your child must always write their name on their paper, otherwise it’s counted as missing until it’s turned in. Class work typically becomes homework if it’s not finished, unless otherwise stated during class.
If your child is absent, it is THEIR RESPONSIBILITY to come to the appropriate teacher to find their missing work. We will not track them down to make sure they have what they missed. Each teacher has a system in their classroom to collect for students that are absent. Please see the planner for the school policy for absent work.
Locker Rules
Students are allowed to go to their locker before school, before recess or lunch for coats and after lunch to drop off coats. Students do not keep class materials in their lockers. We emphasize to our students that they bring phones and other items to school at their own risk.
Cell Phones
CELL PHONES ARE TO BE KEPT IN THEIR LOCKERS AT ALL TIMES. AS STATED IN THE HANDBOOK, THE SCHOOL IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR STOLEN ITEMS FROM LOCKERS. We emphasize to our students that they bring phones and other items to school at their own risk.
Planner Expectations
Students MUST have their planner with them during all classes (with the exception of specials). This is not only used as a personal organizer for students, but a bathroom pass & a homework communication tool. The last 5 minutes of every class will be used to write assignments in the planners. It is expected that ALL students will write the main topic covered in class as well as any homework in the box for each class period every day.
This is a major way we communicate homework and other needs for the week (special events, special materials, etc.). While we do not expect parents to sign the planner every night, we use it as a tool to teach PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.
Extra Help
Teachers are at school by 7:25 every morning and until 3:15 in the afternoon. If extra help is needed, students may make arrangements with the teacher to come early or stay late. Keep in mind, it’s best to ask ahead of time to be sure teachers do not have prior meetings. Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation home.
Parent Expectations
We would like you to check Infinite Campus, our parent access website, if possible. Please call the office at 307-872-4000 if you are unsure as to how to do this.
If you have email, this is the best way to contact any of us. It is extremely important for us to have a CURRENT email address and phone number on file with the office. Keep in mind that while we can’t always answer our phone throughout the day, we do check email regularly.
Please understand our goal this year is to emphasize personal responsibility for your student.
